Brett: This is a great sign. I'm immediately swept in by the comet like arrow flying above the sky-ish/cloud-like blue that boldly declares it's name. This sign almost guarantees me a good nights sleep. The dynamism of the upper portion of the sign sits solidly on it's foundation assuring you it truly is a MOTEL, and yes there are vacancies. Larry: Yes, it most definitely is a MOTEL. That is a point that the sign makes twice. I'm guessing that back when this Motel sign was erected there was a bunch of rogue Hotels trying to get in on the action of Highway 99. The redundancy was necessary. I'm a bit confused at the contrasting style of the bottom "MOTEL". It just doesn't seem to match the rest of the sign. Brett: I have a theory on the contrasting styles of the signage. I would imagine that the upper portion of the sign went up at the time of the Motel itself, of course. Later as those ruffians of the sleep over industry, Hotels, came into the hood the Motel's business suffered. It had to have some way of boldly declaring not only its existence, but also its raison d'etre. They also needed a place to put the proud peacock of the color tv sign. I'd like to see me one of them some day. |
