Larry: This
is one of my favorite motel signs on 99. I like how they give each of the
letters in "MOTEL" its own section. I bet when you stay here they give you
your own room. Is it just me or do you see a big strip of bacon?
Brett: Huh. Now that you mention it, I do see the bacon. On the whole
this sign makes me want to run away screaming...maybe weeping too. It
inspires no confidence in me with the seeming rickety gaps between all of
it's parts and the "bacon" makes me think that the place is held together
with duct tape and twine. Sure a person could point out the dynamic tension
of the negative vs. positive spaces of the sign and sweeping arc of the
"bacon" as contrasted with harsh straight edges and pointy corners of the
blocks...you feel like going for breakfast?
Larry: Oh yeah! I think I know why there is vacancy...the "color tv"
sign is in black and white. People don't trust that sort of thing.
Brett: Nope, they sure don't. I'm also confused by the "commercial
rates" on their sign. Is that for the phone? The customers? The regulars?
What? This brings me to my next question, why is this one of your favorites
on 99, Larry?
Larry: I'm glad you asked. You see, during a time when most Motels
relied upon flashy arrows to draw the patrons in, this place dared to use
"bacon" and other mysterious messages that make you want to not only spend
the night but stay for breakfast too!
