The Nevar formed in 1981 in Victoria, BC Canada.  Eric and Derrick were friends in Elementary school and I met up with them at Reynolds High School in grade 8.  All three of us were in Band together.  Eric was already a percussionist and had a drum set at home in a spare bedroom.  Derrick found a guitar and amp in a closet at his place that used to belong to his older brother.  The only instrument still needed was a bass guitar.  I forked over $20 and bought Steve Ogden's old bass and 100 watt tube amplifier.   Alas, we had a band!

As it turned, all our instruments were made by Raven.  It seemed such a weird coincidence that we called our band "The Nevar" (Raven backwards).

During this time there were plenty of Punk Rock concerts happening in Victoria.  Some favorite venues were the OAP Hall, The FOE hall and the  Fernwood Community Center.  We loved the shows and mimicked the events in each others parents houses when they were away.

Whenever we played one of these gigs anyone who had a ghetto-blaster would place it in the back of the room and try to record as much as possible of the music.  The recordings were all made using the built in condenser microphones and due to cost they were recorded on Normal bias cassette tapes. Now that's quality!

Memorable Nevar gigs:

  • Jungle Reggae's (Mike Do-Wop) parent's basement (twice)

  • Snizz Weiner's (Doug Do-Wop) parent's basement
  • Halloween at Eric's parents upstairs living room

  • The New Wave Cave (Steve from Distortion's converted garage)

  • The Fernwood Community Center with the I-Sci's and Pink Steel
